Are club involvements and research during school really that important for landing a good residency?

I was told on my first day of orientation that club involvements are very important. The representatives were saying how there are people they know with good gpa who don’t get into top residencies since they don’t have any involvements with clubs (which I find baloney). Also, is research very important too? Do you NEED to have publications?
